About the Password Generator
The Password Generator creates strong, random passwords with full control over length and character composition — lowercase letters, uppercase letters, digits, and symbols — plus an option to exclude visually ambiguous characters like the letter "l", the digit "1", the capital letter "O", and the digit "0", which can be easy to mix up when a password needs to be typed manually or read aloud.
A long, random password made from a wide pool of characters is one of the most effective and simplest defenses against automated password-guessing attacks, since it makes both brute-force guessing and dictionary-based attacks dramatically less practical.
The generator uses your browser's cryptographically secure random number source (`crypto.getRandomValues`) rather than an ordinary pseudo-random function, which matters because ordinary random number generators are not designed to resist prediction and are not considered safe for generating security-sensitive values like passwords. To guarantee that every enabled character category appears at least once in longer passwords, one random character is drawn from each selected category first, and the remaining length is then filled with random characters drawn from the full combined pool before the whole result is used as your password.
The strength indicator shown alongside the generated password evaluates length (rewarding passwords of 8, 12, 16, and 24 characters or more) together with the presence of lowercase letters, uppercase letters, digits, and symbols, giving you an at-a-glance sense of how the current settings compare to general best practices.
Common use cases
- Creating a strong, unique password for a new online account.
- Generating a secure password to store in a password manager rather than reusing an existing one.
- Creating temporary or one-time passwords for shared accounts or guest access.
- Generating passwords that meet a specific site's length and character-type requirements by adjusting the settings.
- Producing multiple random passwords quickly when setting up several new accounts at once.
Tips and best practices
- Longer is generally better than more complex — a 20-character password using only lowercase letters can be harder to crack than a shorter password with symbols, though combining both length and variety gives the strongest result.
- Use a password manager to store generated passwords securely, rather than trying to memorize many long, random strings.
- Enable "exclude ambiguous characters" if you expect to need to type the password manually or read it aloud to someone else.
- Generate a fresh, unique password for every account — reusing passwords across sites means a breach at one site can compromise your accounts elsewhere.
